A tiny island recruits an innkeeper and king

The British Isle of Piel is looking for a new manager, who will be responsible for all the grounds, the castle and the pub. The downside: the distance. The advantage: being named king.

It is a very special job offer that the British public authorities have published and that relay The Guardian : the island of Piel is looking for a manager, who will also be tavern keeper and even king of the island.

The future manager will be responsible for The Ship Inn pub and the castle of XIVe century and will sign a ten-year contract with the territorial authorities. The job also involves maintaining the entire island and its infrastructure. Piel is a confetti located in the Cumbria region of the North West of the United Kingdom. A ferry runs there from April to September. The sunsets are there, it seems, incredibly beautiful, as well as the birds and the seals which come to seek refuge there. Corn “The future operator will have to measure the constraints concerning the supply of electricity, the weather, accessibility and the fact that the island is a place of scientific interest [pour sa faune et sa flore]”, precisely specifies a report intended for the councilors of the county of Barrow, in charge of the recruitment. Another important point is to be able to maintain a good relationship with the ferry driver.

Small bonus of the position: traditionally, the manager of the pub is appointed king of the island during a ceremony where the future monarch, seated on a throne, is sprayed with beer …

More seriously, the position to be filled should present some challenges as Piel attracts more and more visitors, seduced by the landscapes and the affordable price of the night compared to the neighboring Lake District.

To apply, contact local authorities. Start of contract: April 2022.
