BROWNSVILLE, Texas, USA (AP) — One person was killed following a tornado was reported early Saturday morning in South Texas near the border with Mexico, U.S. authorities said.

Port Isabel Police Chief Robert Lopez said the person died following the storm struck the unincorporated community of Laguna Heights around 4 a.m. Saturday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Angélica Soria in Brownsville.

Police referred questions to the Cameron County Police Department, which declined to provide further information.

Officials with the Cameron County Emergency Management Agency did not return a phone call seeking comment.

Soria said a weather service investigator was assessing the damage to confirm whether the damage and death were caused by a tornado.

The storm followed an outbreak of dozens of tornadoes in Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Colorado, which caused damage but no deaths.
