A truck carrying laborers veered off a provincial road in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand and plunged into a 50-meter ravine, killing at least eight people, police said today.

The van accident happened late Monday night in the Nainital district of India. 7 Nepali workers were pulled dead from the ravine, while two others were taken to a hospital where they are fighting to stay alive. The Indian driver of the vehicle is also dead.

Nearly 150,000 people are killed each year in road accidents in India, where authorities have set a goal this year to reduce that number by 50 percent.
