Earlier in the week, we learned that Proton extended the accessibility of its Drive by deploying a dedicated Windows application.

The Swiss company offering data-friendly online services has just extended its Proton Drive service by deploying a Windows application. A new step which should broaden the uses of its recent solution and which aims to pose as a reliable alternative to the giants.

Extend accessibility

Launched in beta in 2020, Proton Drive quickly made a name for itself among users concerned about their privacy and the protection of their data. It must be said that the company’s proposal has something to attract. The service was initially launched via a web version, followed at the end of last year by an application for iOS and Android smartphones. Logical evolution, we are now entitled to an application for Windows. A necessity according to Proton, which estimates that around 65% of its users access the service from a Windows device.

The free version of the service only provides access to 1 GB of storage. ©Proton

The goal is also to reach a wider audience, as Anant Vijay Singh, Proton Drive Product Manager, points out: “This is an important step in making secure and private cloud storage accessible to as many people as possible, regardless of platform. With over 1.4 billion Windows users worldwide, we knew we had to choose this platform first for our desktop application. »

Access your files even offline

Concretely, Proton Drive on Windows not only allows you to store your files end-to-end encrypted, but also to continuously synchronize your files between all your devices. A file modified on Windows will also be modified on mobile. A version history is also available to track changes and roll back if necessary. It is also possible to access all its files offline and modify them. Once the connection is regained, the service automatically synchronizes and makes the changes on all devices.

Proton Drive offers free access to its service, but it only offers one gigabyte of storage. To have more space (200 GB) and have access to the version history, you will have to pay € 3.99 per month. It is also possible to upgrade to a Proton Unlimited subscription at €9.99 per month, which gives access to 500 GB of storage, but also to other services: Proton Mail, Calendar, VPN and the new Proton Pass password manager with their paid features.
