A woman will go around the world in an electric Ford Explorer

Lexie Alford, the travel content creator and the youngest person in the world to visit every country on the planet, begins her extraordinary Charge Around The Globe adventure this Friday, September 8, behind the wheel of the new Ford Explorer Electric.

He leaves from Nice (France), and will travel six continents and more than 30 countries on a journey in which he will try to demonstrate everything that is possible in an electric vehicle, and in which he hopes to become the first person to circumnavigate the world in a vehicle of this type. 1

Her trip sums up the spirit of improvement of Aloha Wanderwell, who a century ago was the first woman to circle the world by car. Aloha used a gasoline Ford for his trip, and encountered numerous obstacles that required unusual solutions, such as having oxen pull the vehicle through mud, sand and rivers in India, or requiring the help of others to push it for miles in China, since the civil war made it impossible to buy fuel.

Like Aloha, Lexie will also use a Ford in her feat. The Ford Explorer Electric in which it will depart from Le Hotel Royal in Nice – the same place from which Aloha began its journey – is a pre-production prototype that looks as close as possible to the vehicle that customers will enjoy when it goes on sale in Europe the next summer.

With no special modifications to meet the challenges that await, it is a vehicle tailor-made for this adventure, and will keep Lexie connected, comfortable and prepared for any situation in what will be the ultimate road trip.

“This is an epic journey that will demonstrate what is possible in an electric vehicle, as we know that range and recharging are the two main concerns people have when thinking about switching to a 100% electric vehicle”said Martin Sander, general manager of Ford Model e in Europe. “Lexie is going to test the charging infrastructure; “If she can go around the world in an EV, it will mean that anyone can use it every day in Europe.”

To better prepare for this epic road trip, Lexie has had the opportunity to learn the ins and outs of Ford and the Ford Explorer Electric. She has visited the product design and development teams in Cologne, experienced the extreme temperatures of the Environmental Test Center – or “climate factory” – and completed her advanced driver training certification at the Lommel Proving Ground.

The challenge “Charge Around The Globe”

Aloha Wanderwell’s journey will inspire the route, although ultimately it will be Lexie who will decide her own path when faced with adverse weather conditions, unpredictable terrain or a lack of charging infrastructure; all of this, with the aim of completing the first trip around the world in an electric vehicle.

It will be supported by a team consisting of security personnel, doctors and mechanical and software support staff, who will carry out dynamic risk assessments at the beginning of each day.

“It is an epic adventure, but difficult. “It will be tough on the Explorer and, with the amount of time we will be spending alone on the road, it will be tough on me and the support team.”says Lexie. “However, any worthwhile adventure must be challenging, and I’m looking forward to exploring new places and meeting amazing people, to see how they’re trying to improve their corners of the world.”

Lexie’s Journey will be live-streamed when it comes out on September 8, with regular updates throughout the duration of her adventure.
