Code for Africa’s PesaCheck fact-checking initiative is the largest in Africa with staff in 14 countries producing more than 2,000 denials a year. PesaCheck has established the African Fact-Checking Alliance (AFCA) which has over 370 newsrooms from 29 countries and organizes initiatives to encourage cross-border collaboration and raise awareness among stakeholders to ensure a safe information ecosystem in Africa. AFCA is organizing a workshop on April 20, 2023 to raise awareness against mis/disinformation.
The workshop aims to galvanize AFCA stakeholders by recalling the importance of fact-checking in the fight against mis/disinformation in Africa. The specific objectives are to present the state of fact-checking in the region covered by the AFCA, to examine the existing national and regional mechanisms framing fact-checking and to propose ideas to strengthen the effectiveness of verification. facts.
Expected results include a common understanding and consensus on the performance of national and regional fact-checking systems, increased synergies between regional and national initiatives, and increased awareness of the importance of fact-checking and the role of different actors. The workshop will be held online on Thursday 20 April 2023 and will target a range of actors from different stakeholder groups.
