A Year of COVID: From Confinement to Normalcy – Impact, Testing, and Case Numbers Revealed

It already seems far away, the time of confinement. And yet, it’s only been a little over a year since we resumed a normal life. And again, normal life is a big word since many “habits” taken during the health crisis are still present in our daily lives.

Between the companies that have normalized telework, the vulnerable people who protect themselves in public places by wearing a mask or the “kisses” that have disappeared when we meet again, the covid has left its mark.

But if there’s one thing that’s changed in the past few months, it’s getting tested. While many people have taken the reflex to avoid contact when they are sick, the number of tests carried out on a daily basis has dropped drastically in recent months. Normal for the period, you will tell us, because it is summer, and people are less sick. Yes, but according to data from Sciensano, only a few hundred tests have been taking place per day in recent weeks. We are obviously far, very far, from the 53,000 tests carried out on March 22, 2022 (that day, more than 16,700 positive cases had been recorded, a record).

In addition, tests were no longer made compulsory from October 14, 2022, even in the presence of symptoms. The new testing procedure came into effect at the gates of winter.

And inevitably, who says fewer tests says fewer positive results (it’s not that simple, you actually have to look at the positivity rate), but many cases are still detected per day. To give you an idea of the circulation of the virus, we have, as in the old fashioned way, counted the number of positive cases recorded by municipality since March 16, 2022 (a symbolic date which celebrates, within two days, the start of the first containment), until August 1, 2023, about a year and a half later.

It should be noted, of course, that these data are the official figures listed by Sciensano, and that they do not represent the number of real cases, since many people do not test themselves or do self-tests without notifying the authorities.
