To deal with inflation, Emmanuel Macron had promised to put in place a food check, a system which was to help low-income households cope with the soaring prices of food products. Ultimately, this project was abandoned by the government, to the great dismay of households affected by inflation.

The food check promised by Macron will not see the light of day

Guest on the show “ Sunday in politics » of January 7 on France 3, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, confirmed the abandonment of food checks by the government. The minister ruled that food checks were not “the right way to go”. “Let’s forget check policies, we can’t afford them today,” he declared, favoring support for associations and food banks to help low-income households.

Indeed, the government had already turned to other solutions such as the “inflation check”, as well as the establishment of a fund of 60 million intended for major players in food aid. Bruno Le Maire also wants to be reassuring about the drop in prices of food products in 2024. He believes that certain prices should fall “ as soon as the commercial negotiations have been concluded”i.e. January 31.

The Minister of the Economy promises a drop in food prices

“Last year, when there was a commercial negotiation, there was a 15% price increase. Today, we are more around 5%. It’s always too much”noted the minister on the set of “ Sunday in politics ». “My responsibility is to ensure that prices fall on as many products as possible… You will have price reductions on butter, on oils, on certain products like poultry, on certain meats, not simply a stabilization »he again assured.

However, Bruno Le Maire indicated that a return to pre-crisis prices was clearly unthinkable: “It is not a question of returning to pre-crisis prices. It will not arrive “. On the possibility of organizing commercial negotiations between distributors and suppliers throughout the year, the minister indicates: “I think it would cause a lot of problems for our producers (…) JI’m afraid that this will greatly weaken our farmers”.
