Abarth 500e: The Luxury Electric Hot Hatch with Historic Engine Sound

The new Abarth 500e aims to offer all the characteristics of a luxury car in just 3.6 meters in length, without giving up the brand’s DNA. Thanks to a sound generator, the new Abarth 500e became the only battery-electric hot hatch with the sound of a historic internal combustion engine. The brand with the scorpion should also arouse the emotions of the Abarthisti as an electric car.

The first all-electric vehicle of the Skorpion range integrates in the top version this exclusive sound system, developed by a dedicated team in collaboration with the Sound Design Studios and integrated by the Italian NVH (Noise Vibration and Harshness) department of Stellantis . A few years ago, their engineers had already transferred the sound of the historic Record Monza exhaust system to the present-day combustion engine.

The project lasted around two years. Analyzes were carried out in more than 6000 hours and the perfect soundscape was created for every phase of the driving experience. In addition, NVH specialists dealt with sound enhancement, focusing on both the creative and technological part of the sound generation process.

In order to achieve the most faithful performance possible, the actual sound of the Abarth petrol engine has been recorded at all stages of the driving experience. The recordings were then analyzed using technical tools and processes to extract all the characteristic Abarth frequencies, creating a new sound in a virtual matrix. The matrix has been tested in the studio and on the static car. More sounds were placed on the matrix to combine the historical sound of Abarth with the idea of the future.

An important point was to balance the sound generator in such a way that the driver has the most pleasant driving experience possible, even at high speeds, and that the legal noise regulations are complied with with a realistic sound. In fact, the intensity of the sound coming out of the rear speakers is now proportional to the speed at which the car is being driven. The Abarth roar can be switched on and off by the driver via the cluster settings when the vehicle is started.

The prices: Abarth 500e Scorpionissima – 42,000 euros; Abarth 500e Scorpionissima Sedan – 43,000 euros; Abarth 500e Scorpionissima Cabrio – 46,000 euros. (awm)
