Eternit, a company active in the construction sector, marketed an alloy of asbestos and cement until 1998 when scientific studies sufficiently demonstrated its carcinogenic potential. Eric Jonckheere regrets the behavior of the polluter but also that of the political world, too long hesitant about the idea of definitively banning the use of the harmful substance: “Regretting the tragedies of the past is one thing, but let’s sit down and see together how to improve the situation in Belgium and in the world“, however, expresses Eric Jonckheere. An ambitious political reaction is expected by ABEVA.

Its president hopes to implement a radical asbestos removal plan involving the authorities and the polluter. “I would like to sit down with the Ministers of Health and the Environment to understand the reasons why Flanders is pursuing an asbestos removal plan which is not followed in the rest of the country“, indique Eric Jonckheere.

A large number of public buildings are still contaminated by asbestos. A massive treatment and inventory of the buildings concerned are therefore necessary. A request formulated as a reproach by the president of ABEVA. “If your favorite Italian restaurant puts dog food in your bolognese, they will be caught by the FASFC and the restaurant will have to close. For asbestos this has never been done.

Eternit, already convicted in 2017, has not yet reacted to the judgment and will have to decide in the coming weeks whether to appeal this decision.
