Abrar Ahmed: Pakistani Spinner Signed by Sunrisers Leeds in The Hundred Auction

London – In a move that signals a potential shift in dynamics within The Hundred, Pakistani leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed has been signed by Sunrisers Leeds for £190,000 (approximately $254,201.00) in the inaugural men’s auction. The acquisition, confirmed on Thursday, is particularly noteworthy as Sunrisers Leeds is owned by an Indian conglomerate, Sun TV, raising eyebrows given recent reports of potential reluctance from India-owned franchises to bid on Pakistani players.

The signing of Ahmed comes after a period of uncertainty surrounding the participation of Pakistani cricketers in The Hundred. In February, reports suggested that Manchester Super Giants, MI London, Southern Brave and Sunrisers Leeds might avoid bidding on players from Pakistan amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between India, and Pakistan. Although, both the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the eight franchises subsequently affirmed their commitment to selecting players based on “performance, availability, and the needs of each team,” effectively dismissing any nationality-based exclusion.

Abrar Ahmed, 27, has quickly established himself as a rising star in Pakistani cricket, having taken 52 wickets in 38 Twenty20 matches since his debut in 2024 with an economy rate of 6.67. The bidding for the spinner commenced at £130,000 (approximately $174,000) before Sunrisers Leeds ultimately secured his services, fending off competition from Trent Rockets. This marks the first time a Pakistan player has been signed by an Indian-owned team in the tournament.

The auction as well saw Usman Tariq, Abrar’s compatriot, join Birmingham Phoenix for £140,000 (approximately $187,000). Trent Rockets, which is not Indian-owned, had also expressed interest in Tariq. However, other prominent Pakistani players, including fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, and Haris Rauf, went unsold during the auction. Rauf failed to attract a bid even at his reserve price of £100,000 (approximately $134,000).

Coles Commands Highest Price in Auction

While Abrar Ahmed’s signing generated significant attention, the highest price of the auction was paid for James Coles, a 21-year-old all-rounder from Sussex. London Spirit secured Coles for £390,000 (approximately $521,000), highlighting his potential and the increased financial strength of The Hundred following recent private investment. Former England captain Joe Root also found a new home, joining Welsh Fire for £240,000, alongside Jordan Cox.

The Hundred’s Evolving Landscape

The Hundred, known for its innovative 100-ball format, is set to take place from July 21 to August 16. Last year saw a significant change in ownership structure, with four franchises being acquired by owners of Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. This influx of investment has undoubtedly raised the profile and competitiveness of the league, as evidenced by the record-breaking bids seen in this year’s auction. The league’s unique format continues to draw attention and debate within the cricket world.

Notably, Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal were the only two Pakistani players included in Wednesday’s women’s auction, but both went unsold. This outcome further underscores the complexities surrounding the participation of Pakistani players in the league, despite assurances of a merit-based selection process.

The successful acquisition of Abrar Ahmed by Sunrisers Leeds represents a significant moment for The Hundred, demonstrating a willingness to move beyond perceived barriers and embrace talent from all cricketing nations. The league’s continued growth and evolution will be closely watched as it navigates the challenges and opportunities presented by its increasingly globalized landscape.

The coming months will be crucial as Abrar Ahmed prepares to showcase his skills on English soil. His performance will undoubtedly be scrutinized, not only for his individual contribution to Sunrisers Leeds but also as a symbol of inclusivity and sporting merit within The Hundred. Fans and analysts alike will be eager to observe how this dynamic league continues to unfold.
