The Middle East’s first net zero energy mosque is coming to Abu Dhabi. The mosque is being built in Masdar City, a sustainability hub. The operation will be completely solar powered. The aim is to produce 1590 square meters of on-site PV panels to produce the entire amount of energy required for a year.
The mosque with an area of 2349 square meters can accommodate 1300 people to pray together. The construction of the church will start next year. Masdar City Sustainable Development Executive Director Mohammad Al Breiki said that although many net zero projects have been developed and implemented, it is very important to be able to announce this at COP 28.
The main structure of the mosque mainly uses rammed earth technique of soil, chalk and lime. Small windows will be installed in the roof to allow natural light inside. The decision was made to use recycled materials wherever possible to reduce costs and carbon emissions. Low-flow reservoirs, drought-resistant landscaping, and the use of recycled water for irrigation can all help reduce water use by 55 percent.
