Republican Governor Ron DeSantis and his political allies are questioning academic freedom. This is the case at the New College of Florida, a college now in the hands of an administration made up of conservative activists, leaving students and teachers in dismay.
Since the beginning of the year, we have witnessed a politicization of the university world in Florida, as at New College in Florida: the State now theoretically has the right to suppress gender studies or to inspect the content of courses. This small campus has become an ideological showcase for American conservatism.
We believe that if taxpayers fund these institutions, it gives us the right to insist that they apply a mission consistent with the interests of our people and our state.
