While the medical school quota has been expanded by 2,000 students and the number of students allocated to each university has been confirmed, an admissions expert has expressed the opinion that as the acceptance criteria for local medical schools has been lowered, there is a possibility that students with a grade 3 in mathematics will be admitted.

Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, spoke on YTN Radio’s ‘New King Park Ji-hoon’ on the 22nd about the impact that each university’s medical school allocation will have on entrance exams. He said, “Students’ expectations for entering medical school are working.”

Representative Lim said that until now, the number of students with a level 1 in mathematics in local areas was about twice as many as the number of students admitted to local medical schools, but this time, as the number of students in local medical schools increased, there were not enough students to recruit only students with a level 1 in mathematics.

Representative Lim said, “Statistically speaking, we cannot rule out the possibility that in local areas, instead of a competition between first-grade students, there will be a competition between second-grade students and, depending on the situation, third-grade students.” He continued, “Currently, in local areas, the minimum number of students to be recruited is 400, but there are also areas where less than 100 students are at level 1 in mathematics.” In a situation where the government recommends expanding local talent screening from the current 40% to 60%, it is predicted that even those with unusual scores can pass.

For example, in the Gangwon region, the recruitment quota for four medical schools, including Kangwon National University, Yonsei University Future Campus (Wonju), Hallym University, and Catholic Kwandong University, will increase from 267 to 432. However, according to the Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation and Jongro Academy, there are 97 test takers in Gangwon-do who received a grade 1 in mathematics in the 2023 CSAT. Including level 2, there are 341 people. If 60% (259 people) are selected through the local talent screening process, up to two-thirds of the students who took the level 2 math test will be accepted to local medical schools.

Representative Lim said, “Many of the students who prepared for top science and engineering majors are moving to prepare when medical school recruitment guidelines are released by each university,” and “There are also opinions that students attending science and technology colleges and special universities such as KAIST are trying again and turning to medical school. “He said. He continued, “Because it has become easier to go to college in the countryside, even elementary school students say it would be better to move to the countryside from middle school,” adding, “Even people in their late 30s come for consultation (about medical school admissions).”

Previously, the government announced on the 20th that from this year’s entrance exam, 82% (1,639 students) of the 2,000 medical school admission quota will be allocated to non-metropolitan areas and 18% (361 students) to Incheon and Gyeonggi Province. In addition, the government plans to increase the selection of talent from non-metropolitan areas, which is currently at 40%, to 60%. To enter medical school through regional talent selection, you must attend high school for three years in that region. Starting from the 2028 school year, the period of attendance in middle and high school will be extended to 6 years. However, it is predicted that the effect of increasing the number of applicants will be small for test takers in the metropolitan area, where there is no regional talent screening process.
