Keeping His Voice Strong: ACCEPT‘s Mark ⁣Tornillo on Staying in shape and‌ Vocal Warm-Ups

Seventy-year-old ACCEPT frontman Mark Tornillo recently revealed his secrets to maintaining his powerful vocals on‌ tour, including a‍ simple but effective warm-up routine. Speaking on the “talk Louder” podcast, ⁢Tornillo discussed his dedication to fitness and vocal health. “I try to,” Tornillo replied ⁤when asked about his exercise⁣ habits while on the road. “We try to book hotel rooms that have gyms, but or else I’ll be down here on the floor later before I go to the gig, man, stretching and doing core.” Tornillo, who turned 70⁣ in June, added, ⁣ “I wear ⁣my age like a badge at ⁢this point.”

A unique Approach‍ to Vocal Warm-Ups

tornillo’s pre-show warm-up technique is as distinctive as his powerful voice. He explained that it all started‌ back in the 1980s. “I used to just scream my ass off, drink two six-packs in the dressing room ‍before we would go on,” he admitted. During one such session at a New Jersey ‍club, the owner, whose office was next to the‌ dressing⁤ room, reprimanded Tornillo for his loud warm-ups. “You shut the hell up. I’m on the telephone. I can’t even think,” the owner exclaimed. Tornillo, seeking a solution, rolled up ‍a towel and sang into it. A habit he’s stuck with ever as. “so I just do my warm-up — ‍I have a proper exercise‌ [routine] — and I ⁢just do it in ⁢the towel, though,” Tornillo explained. Tornillo stressed the importance ⁤of vocal technique, especially after‍ ACCEPT’s reunion in 2009.He sought guidance from vocal coach Mark baxter, who had worked‌ with Steven Tyler. “Look, I can’t teach‍ you how to sing. You know how to sing. I can hear it. I listened to your⁤ records. I can‌ hear you sing,” Baxter told ‌him. Tornillo added,”And it’s just a series of — it’s scales, but it’s ‌all different positions of your tongue ‌and your jaw and ‍the vowels.Because vowels mean everything.”
