According to a study, two spoons of olive oil can save your life!

A new study by the Nutritional Epidemiology Unit of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) in Elche shows that regular consumption of olive oil is associated with a lower risk of death “from all causes” , including cardiovascular disease and cancer in adults.

Olive oil reduces the risk of breast cancer

An EpiGEICAM epidemiological study on the relationship between lifestyle and breast cancer risk, promoted by the GEICAM breast cancer research group and carried out by researchers from CIBERESP, the Carlos III Health Institute and the Autonomous University of Madrid, with the collaboration of the Spanish Association against Cancer (AECC) had already shown that the consumption of virgin olive oil for seasoning, frying or cooking, added to the consumption of two tablespoons raw (in salads or with vegetables), reduced the risk of cancer of the breast by 28%.

New study carried out by the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche

As the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) explains, research has been carried out for 18 years, on more than 1,500 adults, and whose state of health and main lifestyles, such as smoking, physical activity and usual diet, such as regular consumption of olive oil were taken into account.

Protective effect of olive oil

This UMH studycarried out jointly with the Institute of Health and Biomedical Research of Alicante (Isabial), published in “Frontiers in Nutrition”, observes a protective effect of olive oil consumption in adults in the Valencian Community and recommends consuming two or more spoonfuls a day of this “key” food of the Mediterranean diet and studied for its antioxidant, anti- inflammation and prevention of hypertension.

This regular daily consumption reduces the risk of mortality by 31%, the risk of cardiovascular disease by 46% and cancer by up to 51%.

Olive oil may reduce the risk of death

The UMH researchers therefore conclude that regular consumption of olive oil is safe and can significantly reduce the risk of death. Of course, they recommend further large-scale prospective studies to confirm this beneficial effect of olive oil in other non-Mediterranean populations.
