According to Secretary General Scherer, ÖSV is “not a friend” of FIS Games

The Austrian Ski Association is fundamentally critical of the FIS Games, which are scheduled to take place for the first time in 2028. “We do not believe that it is necessary to establish another major event because it will become too inflationary and devalue or devalue the existing FIS World Championships, the Olympic Games and possibly even the World Cup,” said ÖSV General Secretary Christian Scherer. “That’s why we’re not a fan of this idea.”

The games with competitions for all snow sports, pushed by FIS President Johan Eliasch, are to be held in years without Olympic Games or World Championships from 2028. According to the FIS reading, the event should be logistically more efficient and sustainable. FIS General Secretary Michel Vion said last fall that winners would be FIS Games winners and also world champions.

“You can perhaps appeal to younger target groups,” said Scherer, adding that the FIS also wanted to focus more on music for this purpose. “That’s obviously the basic idea of what I’m hearing from those responsible for the FIS.” But he believes “that it’s too much,” he told the APA – Austria Press Agency in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. This would devalue the existing products and events.

In addition, the naming is not very appealing. “Will you then get a trophy? Will you then be the FIS Games winner? Apparently I’m not creative enough to imagine that,” remarked the East Tyrolean.

An application for the FIS Games is currently not on the agenda for the ÖSV. According to the FIS announcement from last autumn, St. Moritz and Lillehammer/Hafjell are the two candidates for the premiere of the major event. The award is to take place following a recommendation from an evaluation commission at the FIS Congress on June 4, 2024.

“We at the ÖSV really focus on great World Cup events and recurring Alpine or Nordic World Championships,” said Scherer. After the 2025 Alpine World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm, the World Championships for freestyle, freeski and snowboard will take place in Montafon in 2027. Hochfilzen is scheduled to have the Biathlon World Championships in 2028 or 2029, and Ramsau will have the Nordic title fights in the not too distant future. “And then sooner or later St. Anton will come back with a candidacy for the Alpine World Championships,” revealed Scherer.
