85 percent of young people in Austria “always separate their waste to the greatest possible extent”. This is what Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA) surveyed on the occasion of its 30th anniversary regarding the recycling behavior of 30-year-olds. The information about the standardization of the collection of light packaging since this year is already having an effect: more than two thirds of the boys now know about it.

According to the ARA, people under 30 are considered particularly motivated climate protectors. This is reflected in the separation of waste. “Gen Z” has also decided to recycle even better in the future: 40 percent want to collect more waste separately in the future. More than half said they made a personal contribution to a clean environment through correct separation. Almost a third try to avoid waste and therefore use reusable products.

According to the survey, 44 percent of people under 30 always separate their waste, and another 41 percent try to do so as much as possible. Half of those surveyed act more carelessly if there is no possibility of correct disposal in the immediate vicinity. For around 30 percent, the topic is no longer so important once they are out of the house. Almost a quarter cite a lot of effort as an excuse, while 20 percent cite a lack of time.

Of all packaging materials, the younger generation separates paper most often, with 80 percent. This is followed by plastic bottles (71 percent), metal cans (69 percent) and glass (67 percent). There is room for improvement when it comes to plastic packaging: 50 percent currently collect chip bags, yogurt cups, etc. separately from residual waste. In general, 77 percent of young people see themselves as responsible, followed by their parents and their partner.

“At the beginning of the year, the collection of light packaging in Austria was standardized. This means that all plastic packaging is collected in the yellow bin or yellow bag. 70 percent of those surveyed were aware of the change,” reported ARA board spokesman Harald Hauke. “For climate protection and to achieve the EU recycling targets, we also have to achieve the remaining 30 percent here.”
