Activists Demand Closure of Deurne Airport for a Greener Future

A few dozen activists from the “Doe Deurne Dicht” collective tried on Saturday to block access to Deurne airport. The attempt was quickly countered by the local Antwerp police, who made 43 administrative arrests.

Through this action, carried out in collaboration with Extinction Rebellion, these activists demand the pure and simple closure of the airport and the creation of a public green space in its place.

“We are paying a huge price for this airport: noise, pollution, CO2 emissions and millions of euros coming straight out of taxpayers’ pockets, and this, while very few people, especially the elite, are using it. It’s unfair,” said Doe Deurne Dicht spokeswoman Ruth-Marie.

In March, regarding twenty activists of the collective had already invited themselves to the departures hall of Deurne airport to protest once morest the subsidies granted to the Antwerp airport.
