Activists occupy a forest in Vufflens-la-Ville, in the canton of Vaud

Environmental activists took over, overnight from Friday to Saturday, a forest on the banks of the Venoge, in the Vaud town of Vufflens-la-Ville. They set up a “temporary” camp to denounce the potential use of the site as a gravel deposit.

Coming from a new movement, dubbed Ground Rumblings, the activists are particularly attacking the Orllati construction group which, according to them, covets these lands to extract gravel. About sixty people were present on Saturday morning, at a place called Moulin d’Amour, to set up tents, fix banners in the trees or even install kitchen equipment.

“It’s not a long-term occupation, it’s not a ZAD (Zone to Defend). It is a temporary democratic counter-expertise,” said one of the activists, interviewed by the Keystone-ATS agency.

Assembly Sunday evening

With this “democratic counter-expertise”, the movement wishes in particular to give the floor on the future of the site to various specialists in forest, aquatic and biodiversity environments, as well as to the inhabitants of the region.

Various activities are planned throughout the weekend. A meeting is scheduled for Sunday evening to determine whether or not the occupation will continue.

Two members of the police came to the scene on Saturday morning to assess the situation, before leaving.
