Saturday, May 6 is to be held the inauguration of the exhibition “In the den of Diablo” at the Jesuit chapel in Cambrai. The Cambrai Patrimoine association plans to demonstrate to prevent the event from taking place.

For Antoine Grosjean, this exhibition is “a real offense to the Catholic religion”. This 25-year-old engineer has decided to organize, with the other members of the Cambrai Patrimoine association, a demonstration on Saturday May 6 at the Jesuit chapel in Cambrai for the opening day of the exhibition “Dans l’antre of Diablo”.

The exhibition brings together canvases produced by the American painter Adam Miller as part of the filming of the Diablo IV video game trailer. The paintings, placed on the ceiling of the chapel and in the choir, represent the characters of the game: the army of good fighting evil, embodied by Lilith.

The chapel was chosen from over a hundred locations around the world. It has been deconsecrated and has belonged to the city since 1989. It is used for cultural events such as exhibitions and shows, explains Lydie Perraud of the city of art and history service in Cambrai.

Cambrai Patrimoine hopes to succeed in bringing people together to demonstrate in front of the entrance.“Cambrai is a city of history and heritage, it has inhabitants who care about it”, assures Antoine Grosjean, and he intends to show it. “The goal is to make a demonstration to show our dissatisfaction, as well as a speech to explain our motivations and raise awareness of our cause”, he says.

We hope it will be done in the greatest calm but we hope and believe that this event will be canceled.

According to him, this exposure is a disrespect towards the Jesuits who were buried in the crypt more than 200 years ago. “This universe, whether we like it or not, has nothing to do with a church”, he hammers.

“In fact, it is no longer really a church because it is desecrated, it is no longer dedicated to worship”, responds the vicar general and parish priest of Cambrai, Mathieu Dervaux. The latter wishes to remain neutral in this controversy even if he “understand that people are shocked by this exhibition”.

However, he is convinced that there is no “no intention of the town hall to go against the Church”.

We want the town hall to realize the scandal that this represents.

The Cambrai Patrimoine event is supported by Gérard Philippe, municipal councilor of Cambrai from the Rassemblement National (RN). On Facebook, the chosen one published a press release in which he expressed his irritation: “In addition to the purely mercantile aspect and a bad cultural taste, it will be noted that this is again an attack on the Christian faith and its fundamentals.”

The elected RN asks “Mr. Mayor and Mr. President of the Agglomeration Community of Cambrai” of “stop this indecency”.

Lydie Perraud hopes to convince those who resist with an educational approach. “These are people who imagine things in relation to the videos, she says. However, these videos exaggerate what is in the chapel, it’s normal, they are trailers! When they return, they will see that it is just a set with characters representing the fight of good against evil. It’s not entire walls of demons!”

She ensures that every effort has been made to ensure that “this historic monument is respected in its architecture and as part of the city’s heritage”.

This free exhibition, which will be held until June 11, already promises to have some success with visitors. “I think there will be a lot of people given the enthusiasm it arouses, welcomes Lydie Perraud. We’ve heard a lot of people who seem very excited about this opening.”
