Research shows that the incidence of atrial fibrillation in those who started receiving acupuncture immediately after surgery was only 13.7%, compared with 32.7% in the control group.
In addition, patients who received acupuncture treatment also spent significantly less time in the intensive care unit (37.0 hours vs. 30.3 hours).
The incidence of pain, nausea, and anxiety was low after each acupuncture session and during hospitalization.
The researchers also observed that acupuncture treatment was safe and well tolerated by patients, with no side effects.

The researchers pointed out that acupuncture treatment is also more flexible and can be done after cardiac surgery or in the intensive care unit the day after surgery.
This study enrolled 100 patients who underwent surgical heart valve surgery and were randomly divided into an acupuncture group and a standard treatment group, with 51 patients in one group and 49 patients in the other group. Patients in the acupuncture group started acupuncture for the first time after surgery and had daily acupuncture during their hospitalization.
During an average hospital stay of 4.6 days, patients who received acupuncture received an average of 3.8 acupuncture treatments.
Acupuncture points include 4 auricular points and 5 body points, including the ear acupoints Shenmen acupoint, Neiguan acupoint and Shenmen acupoint.
