That’s what it’s about

  • Adam Driver plays the founder, Enzo Ferrari, in the film “Ferrari”.

  • The US actor already played an Italian in “House of Gucci”.

  • Fans are now making fun of the fact that Driver still can’t manage to sound like an Italian.

Mamma mia, and he wants to portray an Italian? The film “Ferrari” has been showing in Swiss cinemas since Tuesday. Starring: US actor Adam Driver. In the film, the 40-year-old embodies Enzo Ferrari, the legendary founding father of the sports car brand – and horrifies his fans. The reason for this is Driver’s accent. Although he speaks English, he tries to emphasize the words like an Italian. A fan of the actor describes the accent as a mix between a native New Yorker and a Russian. “Why does he keep being cast as an Italian?”

Fans already made fun of his Italian accent in his role as Maurizio Gucci in the 2021 film “House of Gucci”. “He mispronounces every Italian word and every name. When he speaks Italian, as an Italian I need subtitles to understand him,” wrote journalist Antonello Zanini in his blog at the time. Driver had already taken time to work on his accent for the Gucci role.

Adam Driver: “The pressure was enormous”

Playing Enzo Ferrari made the actor nervous. «We filmed in his hometown of Modena, where his iconic status was noticeable. “People reminded us every day how much Ferrari means to them,” Driver told Archyde.com. “The pressure was enormous because we wanted to meet expectations.” The criticism should therefore affect him, because it is numerous. “Whoever approved Adam Driver’s Italian accent needs to be fired immediately,” “He sounds so funny, I can’t take him seriously,” or “The accent is terrible,” people wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Only the racing scenes would save the film to some extent.

However, there are also some fans who protect their favorite. “Adam Driver plays so damn well in Ferrari,” writes someone. Driver’s performance is not valued enough because of the accent debate. Another thinks it was one of the actor’s best performances ever. When “Ferrari” was shown at the Venice Film Festival in September, the Californian received a seven-minute standing ovation and fought back tears for recognition of his performance.

All Italians who are bothered by Driver’s pronunciation can watch the film in the dubbed version. However, the actors’ mouth movements do not match the spoken word in Italian.
