Charleston officials have released additional details about changes planned for this year’s Blue Angels air show, including expected traffic impacts and venue adjustments aimed at improving safety and accessibility. The announcements come as organizers coordinate with local agencies to address ongoing infrastructure concerns, particularly surrounding the Ravenel Bridge.
According to a statement issued Friday by the Charleston County Aviation Authority and the City of North Charleston, modifications to flight patterns, spectator zones, and ground access routes are being implemented in response to feedback from past events and current bridge maintenance schedules. Officials emphasized that the changes are designed to minimize disruptions while maintaining the air show’s signature performance standards.
The Ravenel Bridge, a critical artery connecting Mount Pleasant and downtown Charleston, is expected to face periodic closures during the air show weekend due to heightened security protocols and crowd management needs. While exact closure times have not been finalized, authorities advised residents and visitors to anticipate delays and consider alternate routes, particularly on the Saturday and Sunday of the event.
Flight Path Adjustments and Spectator Guidance
Officials confirmed that the Blue Angels’ demonstration flight path has been shifted slightly westward to reduce noise impact on residential areas near Joint Base Charleston and improve visibility for spectators along the Cooper River waterfront. The adjustment also aims to alleviate congestion at primary viewing areas, which have historically drawn crowds exceeding 50,000 attendees per day based on past attendance records.

Spectators are encouraged to use designated viewing zones at Patriots Point, the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina, and select areas along the Ravenel Bridge pedestrian path — though access to the bridge span may be restricted during peak performance times. Parking will be available at the Charleston International Airport and remote shuttle lots, with free transit service operating between sites.
Coordination with Public Safety Agencies
The air show’s operational plan includes close collaboration with the Charleston Police Department, South Carolina State Transport Police, and the U.S. Coast Guard to manage maritime and aerial safety zones. Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) will be enforced over the demonstration area during practice and performance hours, as coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration.
Emergency response teams will be stationed throughout the venue, and medical units will be positioned near high-traffic zones. Officials noted that all plans remain subject to change based on weather conditions or real-time assessments, with updates to be posted on the official air show website and verified social media channels.
As final preparations continue, organizers stress that public cooperation with traffic advisories and security screenings will be essential to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for attendees. The 2024 Charleston Air Show featuring the U.S. Navy Blue Angels is scheduled for May 25–26.
