Representative Dr. Irene Saeed, a member of the Health Committee in the House of Representatives, submitted a briefing request addressed to Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, regarding the delay in decisions and procedures regulating the dispensing of antibiotics in pharmacies without a prescription.

Prohibiting the dispensing of antibiotics from pharmacies

Saeed added in the briefing request that the delay in these decisions resulted in the Egyptian patient being given the highest levels of resistance to antibiotics internationally, which is considered an imminent danger facing the Egyptian patient. The patient no longer responds to many antibiotics, due to the increase in incorrect and unscientific use of antibiotics.

Accordingly, the representative demanded that antibiotics be dispensed with at least a doctor’s prescription in the governorates where comprehensive health insurance has been implemented, and that they be gradually rolled out to the rest of the governorates of the Republic.
