The German Interior Minister announced on Tuesday that she wanted more substantial expulsions of foreigners who commit crimes, after the publication of statistics showing an increase in foreign crime in the country.
“There is never any justification for violence. In this area, my motto is unequivocal: zero tolerance,” declared Social Democrat Nancy Faeser, during the presentation of police crime statistics in 2023.
This means “consequent intervention by the police” and “rapid procedures, convictions and tangible sentences”, she continued.
Convicted foreigners should leave Germany “much more quickly than until now”, she insisted, hoping for an acceleration of procedures, but also stressing the importance of preventive measures.
Last year, the number of crimes in Germany increased significantly, reaching its highest level since 2016, according to the crime report.
In total, authorities recorded 5.941 million offenses – an increase of 5.5% compared to 2022 and 9.3% compared to the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic, 2019.
The proportion of foreign defendants increased by 17.8% to around 923,000, while that of Germans increased by 1% to 1.32 million.
For experts, this surge is largely explained by high immigration rates, while Germany experienced a resurgence in arrivals of Syrians and Afghans last year after having already welcomed nearly a million people. Ukrainians fleeing the war of Russian aggression.
That people from other countries are “in principle more criminal (…) this is not true”, noted the head of the German judicial police (BKA), Holger Münch, calling above all for better integration.
The overall increase in crime is also linked to the removal of anti-Covid restrictions.
