“Lebanese Debate”

The more severe the economic crisis becomes, the more fragile the health sector becomes, which exposes patients to imminent danger to their lives after Indian and Iranian medicines invaded the Lebanese markets. Has the sector reached the brink of collapse?!

In this context, the former head of the Pharmacists Syndicate in Lebanon, George Saili, points out that “smuggled medicines are still confined to certain regions and groups, and have not spread widely, so we can absorb them, limit them, and deal with the issue.”

In an interview with the “Lebanese Debate”, Saili says: “In any country, if any disruption of the system occurs, its structure is restructured and fixed,” considering that “the results of entering counterfeit medicines are dangerous because they are directly related to the patient’s life and cannot be played with.”

And he stresses that “this issue must be dealt with in terms of saving the country from the collapse of health security, because the collapse of health security is a collective responsibility, not the responsibility of the Ministry of Health. It is the responsibility of the security services, the Ministry of Health, and every person involved in politics in Lebanon.”

And he considers that “people who bring smuggled medicines into Lebanon must be deterred, because this process is not for trade, medicine is a healthy human aspect.”

What are the solutions to reduce this phenomenon? He places responsibility on the Minister of Health, and how he handles this file, who is supposed to communicate with everyone to work to reduce this phenomenon.

Saili touches on the recent conference held by the Minister of Health, from which he sensed that the Minister has no authority over the areas in which illegal drug security outposts are located.

In conclusion, Saili stresses “the need to implement the law, as well as the role of politicians to curb chaos in the pharmaceutical sector, which will remain unchallenged if politicians do not take a clear position on controlling it, calling for unifying all efforts to limit this phenomenon.”
