Addressing the Crisis of Foreign Minors on the Streets: Providing Accommodation and Specialized Care

2023-07-27 22:34:22

Most of these foreign minors are on the street, but they sometimes manage to find accommodation, at Fédasil, at the red cross, at the SAMU social or elsewhere. This is the other main task of these street workers, as Maddalena of SOS Jeunes explains: “We manage to accommodate only a small part. It really depends on the day. And especially following the fire that there was at the citizen platform in the center of the Porte d’Ulysse. There was a loss of 250 places“. This fire in March 2023, in the largest accommodation center of the citizen support platform for refugees, made the number of places very limited. For a time, the organization Doctors Without Borders had invested in a hotel, the “Nekhotel”, opposite the Gare du Midi, where 90 places had enabled some of these minors to get out of their addiction problems. According to Christine Roisin, coordinator at SOS Jeunes, these people “(…) require specialized care (…) which is long-term and which allows weaning which will be beneficial for [eux]“.
