2023-08-09 20:14:18

The Tunisian Celiac Association has called on the Ministry of Trade and Export Development and the Ministry of Social Affairs (Tunisian Union for Social Solidarity) to find a solution to the shortage of rice essential in a gluten-free diet.

The President of the Association, Mongi Ben Hariz said that Tunisia has been experiencing problems for a year with the supply of rice completely non-existent for more than two months, stressing that this product is vital for people intolerant to gluten because their food is prepared with rice.

Celiac disease is a chronic intestinal disease triggered by the consumption of gluten, a mixture of proteins contained in certain cereals (wheat, barley, rye, etc.). The disease is mainly manifested by digestive symptoms (diarrhea, pain, bloating, etc.).

In people with celiac disease, ingestion of gluten leads to an abnormal immune reaction in the small intestine, which creates inflammation and damages the intestinal wall.

Tunisia has regarding 100,000 patients with celiac disease, of which only 40,000 know it.
