Violence in schools is also present in the region. In Bas-Saint-Laurent too, school staff are under severe strain. A child recently tried to attack another, armed with a pair of scissors. A violent event denounced by an employee who considers that management did not act as it should.

“During recess, a young person came out with a pair of scissors to attack another young person in the schoolyard. […] The other young man managed to take refuge inside the school and the young man tried to return to attack him. He did not succeed because the doors were barred,” explained a staff member of this school who wishes to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals.

That day, it took around forty minutes to subdue the youngster.

Immediately after the event, the Phares School Service Center indicates that there were discussions between teachers and their students about what had just happened.

The Phares School Service Center explains, however, that no communication was sent to parents “since the situation has been brought under control”.

“It was during recess, all the young people who were in the playground were trying to see what was happening. Some were traumatized, some were crying in the corridors afterwards. I consider that there could have been more support for the students,” explained our source.

This person decided to break the silence because she considers that violence is too present in schools and that it is not denounced as it should be.

“There are situations of violence that frequently occur in schools. I believe that this situation was really serious and it was too trivialized by management,” she added.

Management did not consider it necessary to call the Sûreté du Québec that day.

According to our source, people are still hesitant to call the police for this type of situation, because there is no “clear protocol”.

“Yes, I believe that the Sûreté du Québec had to act in this case. […] We do barricaded confinements with the students, we do fire practices, there may be a lack of information on how to manage situations like these in schools,” she explained.

According to the president of the Mitis region education union, Jean-François Gaumond, there is awareness to be raised.

“We don’t automatically think of calling the police, but we are there in our schools, even primary schools, to protect our teachers and students,” said Mr. Gaumond.

The Union also believes that violent events are unfortunately “tolerated”.

“We have so trivialized acts of violence for a long time that they are considered common when there should be zero tolerance,” added Mr. Gaumond.

The Phares School Service Center assures that this type of event does not occur every day and maintains that violence is not increasing in the region’s schools.

According to the School Service Center, everything was done to supervise and support the two students concerned.

Our source believes, however, that the support should not only apply to the two people concerned and that additional protection measures should be put in place.
