Euskirchen’s Cycling Climate: A Critical Assessment Reveals Areas for Improvement

euskirchen, June 20, 2025 – A New assessment of cycling conditions in the Euskirchen district paints a sobering picture, indicating substantial room for improvement despite the region’s long-standing designation as pedestrian and bicycle-friendly. The recent nationwide ADFC bicycle climate test (Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club), a thorough survey evaluating cyclist experiences, reveals that Euskirchen’s municipalities barely achieve a “sufficient” rating.

The Bicycle climate test, supported by The Federal Ministry Of Transport, engaged 600 cyclists across six municipalities within the Euskirchen district. Participants rated various aspects of their cycling habitat, providing critical feedback on infrastructure, safety, and support for cyclists.

Key Findings From The Euskirchen Bicycle Climate Test

The test results underscore a mixed bag of experiences, with some municipalities performing slightly better than others.

  • Euskirchen: While showing marginal improvement sence 2022, the city still faces criticism regarding public transport integration for bicycles, traffic light timing unfavorable to cyclists, and inadequate management of cycling during construction projects.
  • Weilerswist: earning the lowest rating in the district, Weilerswist struggles with poor bicycle parking facilities, insufficient winter maintenance on bike paths, and a general lack of support for cycling initiatives.

Even municipalities earning “sufficient” grades face distinct challenges, highlighting the need for targeted improvements across the district.

Municipal Performance Breakdown

A closer look at individual municipalities reveals specific areas of concern and potential for growth.
