Sadness as a gift: Big Thief-Front woman Adrianne Lenker releases the exquisite studio album Bright Future the Bandcamp exclusive charity EP I Won’t Let Go of Your Hand.

Handlebar, largely reduced to her voice and a gently played acoustic guitar (which wonderfully caresses the toilet in the throat Relief through a Grouper-esquely dripping out of time, as if replacing a mournful piano in a troubled fog), conjures up a spontaneously captured collection of their singer-songwriter/indie folk art in a lo-fi sound, which casually warms the heavy heart.
The gentle melancholy of the pieces is bittersweet in the ear, warm and poetic, fragile and introspective, as fragile and intimate as the relative uniformity spreads out a familiar melody, atmospherically dense and also a coherent arc of tension in the not-so-sketchy, but only to a limited extent perfectly crafted. In this respect, Lenker has already written more overwhelming songs – as a moving gem (close to Songs) is I Won’t Let Go of Your Hand but a disarmingly well-rounded thing.
