Advancing FX Clearing: Safer Settlement Insights – Risk.net

London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) and LCH ForexClear have been jointly recognized as the world’s best FX clearing and settlement venue for 2025 by Euromoney, a financial news publication. The award acknowledges advancements in post-trade services for foreign exchange markets, a sector increasingly focused on risk mitigation and efficiency.

The recognition comes as banks are actively seeking ways to reduce initial margin requirements for derivatives trading. According to a report by Risk.net, institutions are turning to synthetic derivatives as a means of lowering these costs, a strategy that impacts clearinghouse volumes and risk profiles. This shift is occurring alongside broader changes in the regulatory landscape, particularly concerning the Uncleared Margin Rules (UMR).

Risk.net reported that the growth of client clearing is directly linked to the implementation of UMR, which mandates central clearing for a wider range of derivatives transactions. This increased demand for clearing services has place pressure on venues like LSEG FX and LCH ForexClear to enhance their capabilities and capacity.

Separately, dealers are preparing for a potential mandate to clear over-the-counter (OTC) swaps in Taiwan, as reported by Risk.net. This development highlights a global trend toward greater regulatory oversight of the derivatives market and the increasing importance of robust clearing infrastructure. The Taiwan mandate is expected to further concentrate clearing volumes with established venues.

In the U.S. Equity markets, discussions are underway regarding a potential move to T+0 settlement – shortening the settlement cycle from two days to the same day. Traders Magazine reported on this possibility, which, if implemented, would necessitate significant adjustments to clearing and settlement processes across the industry. Whereas focused on equities, the potential for faster settlement cycles is a theme resonating across asset classes, including FX.
