Advocating for a Total Ban on Glyphosate in European Agriculture: Health And Environmental Concerns

2023-10-08 06:32:00

In Flanders as in Wallonia, glyphosate is already banned for individuals, but Groen now wants to extend the ban to the European agricultural sector. “It is not logical that glyphosate is banned from your driveway, but that it can still end up on your plate via agriculture,” explains Jeremie Vaneeckhout.

At the European level, “Germany and Luxembourg have spoken out in favor of a total ban. Thanks to pressure from the Greens, Belgium will abstain in the vote. Which will hopefully lead to a total ban in Europe”, continues the latter.

“Enough other methods”

“The World Health Organization is clear regarding the health dangers posed by glyphosate. This toxin is potentially carcinogenic and is associated with lymphoma, infertility, Parkinson’s disease. There is evidence that it is harmful to bees and aquatic life. Why should we allow such products that endanger our health and our environment any longer?” asks the politician.

According to him, agriculture has enough other methods that “are not harmful to health and the environment.”

The European Union will make its final decision on October 13.
