With twice the operational capacity, and completely renovated, to offer a complete travel experience to passengers, Aena delivered the works at Presidente João Suassuna Airport, in Campina Grande. Users now find larger and more functional spaces, following the concessionaire’s standards of comfort, safety and modernity, contributing to the economic and tourist growth of one of the main cultural hubs in the Northeast. After Maceió and Juazeiro do Norte, this is the third facility opened by Aena.

Structural works allow operations to be expanded by 100%. Now, the Campinas terminal has the capacity to serve 250 thousand passengers per year. Interventions in the embarkation and arrival areas contributed to this growth. With 400m², the departure lounge gained a new, wider and more comfortable x-ray inspection channel. Arrivals covers 333.45m² and its main features include a modern conveyor belt for quick baggage reclaim, and new air conditioning and fire fighting systems.

“The completion of the airport expansion works is a source of great pride not only for those who dedicated themselves and worked hard on a daily basis, but also for the entire population. We now have more modern spaces with new features for users. The entire travel experience had a significant gain, from the passenger’s arrival at the terminal, to the access route to the aircraft. Passengers are having more comfort and service options”, highlighted Luciano Rodrigues, director of the airport.

More accessibility and comfort

A few days before the inauguration, the airport’s facade also underwent renovations, attracting the attention of those arriving. With an additional 800m² of area, the passenger terminal was air-conditioned and gained a glass facade. The huge panel by Ariano Suassuna is now inside the building, beautifying the terminal and better preserved, protected from the weather. In addition, the parking lot also received improvements, with more spaces and security. The curb is now available for public boarding and disembarking, facilitating the arrival flow.

New services

In addition to the infrastructure reform, the services offered at Campina Grande Airport received improvements. The entire commercial area was readjusted, with a greater variety of stores, cafes and restaurants spread across the terminal. The customer service offering was also increased. The check-in area gained a greater number of counters, baggage carousels and offices for airlines.

Expansion of the air network

The reform provided Campina Grande with an increase in its airline network, the largest expansion in the history of the region. The terminal now offers strategic routes, with flights to several direct destinations, such as Salvador, Recife, Fortaleza, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte. Each of the destinations provides great connectivity to meet customer demand and encourage tourism in the city of Paraíba. Furthermore, the new aircraft apron adds to the existing one, raising the level of the airport.

Track

A series of improvements were made to the airport’s runway, making landing and takeoff procedures safer and in line with current regulations. On the taxiway, with the aim of better assisting pilots’ maneuvers, new signs were implemented, both vertical and horizontal. In addition, RESAs (Runway End Safety Areas) were also installed at both ends of the runway. Finally, the lighting was increased and the asphalt was revitalized.

Environmental commitment

From the very beginning of the works, reducing environmental impacts was a priority for Aena, with water and sewage treatment plants and a solid waste plant. Improving the use of energy sources was also on the agenda. Management focused on sustainable development is already bearing fruit. In June this year, Campina Grande Airport was awarded an award in Anac’s sustainability program. The Sustainable Airports initiative evaluated actions aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of national airport operations.
