Lawyers for the apartment owners of the building that collapsed in SurfsideFlorida, causing the death of nearly a hundred people, reached a “tentative” agreement for which they will distribute 83 million dollars among those who lost their homes.

The sum would be divided among those who lost their properties in the Champlain Towers South building collapsewhich occurred in June 2021 in Miami-Dade County, which partially collapsed in the middle of the night while its inhabitants slept.

the dealreached in the last hours in a mediation session, must still be approved by Judge Michael Hanzmanin charge of the case, who explained this Friday what the commitment consists of, reported the channel NBC6.

The 83 million dollars would be distributed among the apartment owners according to the relative value of each unit and would not be subject to assessment, regardless of how much death, wrongful and personal injury damages are ultimately awarded.

But nevertheless, wrongful death lawsuits by the families of the 98 people who died in the collapse they will go ahead.

According to the aforementioned station, those who have presented wrongful death or personal injury claims will divide among themselves any other funds that are recoveredsuch as the sale of the land, money from insurance or claims against third parties.

Thus, under the settlement announced today, any further funds recovered in this case beyond the $83 million would go to the wrongful death plaintiffs. The trial was set for March 2023.
