Affordable Education: Managing School-Related Expenses and Balancing Family Budgets

To these costs are added the bill for extracurricular activities and clothing. “Gym and clothes are a really big job because at that age they grow up fast and wear out too. We have to buy around four pairs of shoes, two jackets and seven or eight outfits per year per child, or around €1,500 for both,” they estimate.

Then come the sports dues.

“With us, it’s a big investment because they go to the swimming pool, to the gym and to ping or dance, which represents 800€ a year for both. There are also internships during the holidays. Generally, we manage to get them to do three weeks of internship and two weeks of municipal daycare, which cost us around €600. All combined, we arrive at €4,200 for both… And they are in primary school… Family allowances are not a luxury…”

According to the PTB, these amounts are underestimated by the authorities. The PTB wants the school canteen to be free: “Free meals for 6% of pupils, that’s not enough!”

“The workers have been very affected by the various crises and the generalized inflation. For a family of two children who eat hot meals, we are quickly on a budget of 1000 € per year. Even for families where both parents work, add to that all the other school-related costs and you quickly wonder if you will be able to leave the children to hot meals. Already last year, one in five families gave it up because of the cost.”, denounces MP Alice Bernard.
