Africa Data Centers announced that it has inaugurated the expansion of its Samrand facility in Johannesburg from 10 MW to 40 MW of IT load. Expansion, says Tesh Durvasula, CEO of Africa Data Centers, “will take place in several phases”. Construction of the first phase begins this August 30 and will deliver 20 MW across eight data halls by 2023. The next phase will include an additional 10 MW IT load by the end of 2025. The infrastructure will be fully modular, all critical plant rooms being prefabricated off-site.
The inauguration of the Africa Data Centers facilities in Johannesburg is an integral part of the expansion, as South Africa is one of Africa’s most important data center markets and a gateway for small nearby markets. The company recently said it was expanding its capacity in Johannesburg to 100MW of IT load. This announcement follows the recent launch of a new 10MW data center at the company’s campus in Midrand and the expansion of the organization’s operations to Accra, Ghana.
The data center giant will build large scale data centers across Africa, including the top five data center markets in North Africa, namely Morocco, Tunisia, Kenya, India. South Africa and Egypt.
“Our unmatched investment of $500 million will enable Africa Data Centers to build numerous interconnected, cloud-neutral and carrier-neutral data centers across the continent. It will more than double our already large footprint on the continent and aims to help Africa achieve its digital transformation goals.” he added.
