The African Theater Festival will take place from April 24 to 30 in Rabat, under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, and as part of “Rabat, African Capital of Culture”.

Organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, in partnership with the Collectif Éclats de Lune, this first edition aims to highlight the richness and diversity of contemporary African theatre, say the organizers in a communicated. For this, the event which is part of “Rabat African Capital of Culture”, will bring together companies from ten different countries. In addition to Morocco, troops from Congo, Guinea, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Mali, Cameroon, Kenya, the Comoros Islands and Benin will take part in this cultural event with an African influence, the statement said.

“Theatre of reality, resistance, resilience, utopias, theater of cities and neighborhoods, theater of men and women, of their struggles and their dreams: the programming of this first edition offers an unprecedented vision of contemporary African theater , carried by authors and emerging directors of international renown ”, underlines the same source.

“The African Theater Festival will also be an opportunity to honor the creativity of women and men who have made theater a medium for expression and creation, at the crossroads of cultural wealth and the commitments of a whole continent”, argue the organizers.

Theater in Africa, state of play and perspectives

A rich and varied program of theatrical performances, but also round tables, will offer the public a special space for exchange and debate, around themes such as “Theatre in Africa, inventory and perspectives”, “How to rethink festivals in Africa” or “How to create a dynamic between theater schools on the continent”.

The African Theater Festival, of which Rabat will host the first edition from April 24 to 30, aims to be the first pan-African meeting dedicated to theater on the continent, said the artistic director of the “African capitals of culture” program under Cities and Governments United Locals of Africa (UCLG Africa), Khalid Tamir.

Through this event, “Morocco affirms its desire to contribute to the development and structuring of the continental live performance market”, further believes Mr. Tamir.

It is also an opportunity to invite different companies and speakers to present their creation, their vision on theater and its creative process. In this context, he continues, meetings will be organized to analyze and discuss the realities of the disciplines related to the theater, from an inclusive, participatory and local approach.
