Kamoa Copper S.A. reached commercial operation on August 12, 2026, for the Kamoa-Kakula Solar BESS Baseload Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Developed by CrossBoundary Energy, the facility supplies 30 megawatts of firm renewable baseload power to Africa’s largest copper mining complex using a 233 megawatt-peak solar array and a 526 megawatt-hour battery system.

According to reports from CrossBoundary Energy, the system pairs a 233 MWp photovoltaic installation with a 123 MVA/526 MWh battery energy storage system. Here is the math: surplus daytime solar generation routes directly into the battery containers, allowing the plant to maintain a continuous, uninterrupted output of 30 MW.

The project sits on the western edge of the DRC Copper belt. It achieved commercial operation roughly 16 months after Kamoa Copper S.A. signed the power purchase agreement in April 2025. Industry data cited by African Energy notes that the average utility-scale solar and storage project across the continent typically requires about 29 months from contract execution to commercial operation. This timeline sets a new operational benchmark for speed and scale in heavy industrial microgrids.
