Mods improve games and expand cities.

The enduring appeal of a game like Cities: Skylines lies in the thousands of mods created by its community. Entirely new maps, buildings, landmarks, vehicles, roads, themes and sometimes game systems are constantly being created by modders, which means that every time you sit down to design a city , you will find something completely new to add to it.

So it’s always good news when a publisher embraces the modding community instead of tolerating it, even if it takes them a while to get used to it. In this case, it’s been around 25 years: the Anno series of strategic city-building games have been around since 1998, first developed by Max Design and later by Ubisoft Blue Byte. This month marks the first time in the history of the Anno series that it will receive official mod support.

Mods are integrated into the newest Anno game, Anno 1800, with mod.io, and official support is rolling out in phases. The first phase involved inviting modders to submit mods, and it was no surprise that this invitation was resoundingly accepted. More than 100 mods have appeared in the first 48 hours, and you can already find a variety of building skins, modified production chains and resource buildings, a bigger port, new map models, and a lot of small city builder improvements and alterations.

You won’t have to wait long to start playing with these mods: on August 22, mod.io integration will be available to all Anno 1800 players. You will be able to launch the game, browse the mods menu of the game, download and activate all the mods you want. Pretty cool !

That’s not the only exciting mod news this week: today we learned that Rockstar has bought out the creators of the GTA Online FiveM mod it banned 8 years ago. It’s quite a turnaround.
