After 6 years, Kuwait returns its ambassador to Tehran

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian received the credentials of Badr Abdullah Al-Munaikh, the first Kuwaiti ambassador to Tehran since the Gulf emirate reduced its diplomatic representation in the Islamic Republic in 2016.

And the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated, on Saturday night, that Al-Munaikh presented his credentials “to begin performing his diplomatic duties as his country’s ambassador to the Islamic Republic of Iran.”

Kuwait had reduced the level of its diplomatic representation in the Iranian capital following Saudi Arabia’s decision in January 2016 to sever its relations with the Islamic Republic once morest the backdrop of attacks by its diplomatic missions from protesters over Riyadh’s execution of the opposition Saudi Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.

The Kuwaiti move comes in light of a dialogue that Iran and Saudi Arabia have been conducting for more than a year, seeking to improve relations between the two regional rivals.

And Iraqi Foreign Minister Fouad Hussein announced last July that his country was preparing to hold a public meeting between the Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers.

The return of the Kuwaiti ambassador to Tehran comes weeks following the UAE announced that it was considering returning its ambassador to the Iranian capital, following years of taking a similar step to the Kuwaiti move.
