Lima: In a dramatic move, Dina Boulerte took office as the first woman president in the Latin American country of Peru. President Pedro Casillo was fired after announcing the dissolution of parliament and the imposition of a nationwide curfew, parliament said.
He was ousted with the support of 101 members of the 130-member Congress. Then the police arrested Kasilo. His attempt to seek asylum at the embassy was blocked by security officials. Casillo is also housed in the police prison in Lima that housed former president Alberto Fujimori. 60-year-old Dina Boulerte was the vice president.
Dina Boulerte is the sixth president of Peru since 2016. She will continue as president till 2026. There were three investigations and major protests against Casillo during his tenure. The cabinet was reshuffled five times in 18 months.
