A teacher banishes Dürrenmatt from his class for a racist word
A Zurich teacher will neglect a classic of Swiss literature until the publisher adapts two problematic passages. He explains himself.
“Die Physiker” – “The Physicians” – by Friedrich Dürrenmatt is a classic of Swiss literature. On both sides of the Sarine, many students study the play published in 1962. But those of Philippe Wampfler, aged 15 to 17, will no longer touch it. This German teacher in the city of Zurich decided to ban her from the program. The book contains a word accepted today, without question, as racist. Twice, the author uses the term “nigger”.
