CARLOS Sainz has expressed confidence he is fit enough to drive his Ferrari at the Melbourne GP.

However, he will decide whether to race after seeing his body condition in training. The Spaniard underwent an appendectomy two weeks ago, which forced him to miss the last grand prix in Saudi Arabia.

Sainz was replaced by Oliver Bearman and managed to finish seventh in the Saudi Arabian GP.

He said it was getting better by the day, after spending the last two weeks recovering.

“Every day I feel much better, the first week was tough. At that time you see things are a little darker,” AFP quoted Sainz as saying.

“But in the second week the recovery was very fast and I started to feel confident I could get in the car tomorrow and do well. We’ll see, I feel positive,” he added.

Sainz was third behind winner Max Verstappen and Dutch Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez at the season-opening race in Bahrain.

Red Bull repeated the one-two feat in Jeddah, where Sainz’s teammate Charles Leclerc took the podium.

Although Sainz has received clearance from doctors and is ready to race, it is still unclear how his body will react under the pressure of a Formula 1 car.

“I’ll let you know tomorrow when I get back in the car and the G-forces make me a little tired,” he said. (AFP/Ndf)
