The Islamic fasting month of Ramadan has come to an end. It was a period of spirituality and social life for many Muslims worldwide – and of increased risk of political and military escalation in the Middle East. Before the start of Ramadan, Israel threatened to launch the ground offensive in Rafah during this time. That might have led to an explosion of tensions on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. Those Arab states that have valid peace treaties with Israel – and which have not been called into question in view of the Gaza war – would have had to reckon with increasing internal difficulties.
