After Zuckerberg, Meta’s technology director also criticizes Vision Pro

After the video from the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerbergthe technology director and head of the area responsible for the company’s headsets, Andrew “Boz” Bosworthpublished a series of Stories on his account on Instagram answering a question about the Apple Vision Pro.

Surprising a total of zero people, he repeated much of the CEO’s criticism of the device, stating that Meta’s Quest 3 is superior to Apple’s headset.

The executive had already demonstrated agreement with Zuckerberg in um post no X (former Twitter), highlighting that Meta’s product would not only have a better cost-benefit ratio, but would be better as a whole. In Stories, Boz stated that he had tested Vision Pro and, despite saying that he had high expectations, he echoed some points discussed by his boss previously.

One issue that Bosworth placed a lot of emphasis on was the design of Apple’s headset and the company’s engineering choices, criticizing the compromises made to achieve better results in some areas at the expense of others.

The executive said that the Apple device is uncomfortable because it is very heavy and does not balance the weight well, despite recognizing that this factor depends on the face of each user. For him, the use of metal and glass would not be as premium in a headset as it is in other devices precisely because it makes it very heavy and uncomfortable. The cable that connects the Vision Pro to the battery was also criticized for its discomfort.

Another aspect he addressed was hand movement detection, which would be better on the Quest 3. Even so, he said that the presence of controls with the Meta headset makes the user experience better.

He also criticized the distortion of the Vision Pro displays when moving, despite acknowledging the high resolution of the screens. The integration into the company’s ecosystem was praised and, at the same time, condemned, as the device is not as integrated with devices from other brands as with Apple’s own.

Bosworth, however, acknowledged the quality of the Vision Pro’s eye movement tracking feature. Responding to a previous question, he stated that there is a great cost in implementing the technology, not just financial, but in sacrificing other aspects of the device such as battery and performance, something that both he and Zuckerberg criticize in the Apple device.

Something interesting is that, unintentionally, he may have corroborated the speculation that Meta was being influenced by Vision Pro. In one of the Stories, the executive admitted that perhaps the company needs to “tell the story better” in relation to features of the Mixed reality quest, streaming and the like, in addition to stating that the company would add other functions in the future.

Despite this, it was very clear — something also observed in Zuckerberg’s video — his tone of wanting to make it clear that Meta has been in the virtual/augmented reality headset market for some time, while Apple is only just arriving. The conclusion of Bosworth’s speech is, of course, that the Quest 3 is better than the Vision Pro, regardless of price.
