AGJPB Leaves IFJ: Reasons, Implications, and Future Impact Explained

2023-09-25 16:37:00

The AGJPB leaves the IFJ following careful consideration. The Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, German, Swiss and Dutch journalists’ associations had already ceased their collaboration with the IFJ, recalls the AGJPB, which remains, like the others, a member of the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ).

“These cascade departures are explained by a very long conflict relating to the governance of the IFJ, its lack of transparency, its leadership, its management”, explains the Belgian association, which also criticizes the international organization for its break with the FEJ.

In fact, the IFJ decided, in April, to break the financial solidarity agreement with the European federation, leaving the latter alone with a budget deficit. “This abrupt break in solidarity with the EFJ is unacceptable in form and endangers the European federation,” insists the association.

Furthermore, the IFJ “remains in default of respecting the Belgian Code of Companies and Associations (CSA), in that it only grants the right to vote to its members at Congresses (every 3 years) and not at annual general meetings. This non-respect of the fundamental rights of members has the particular consequence that democratic control cannot be exercised over the Executive Committee of the IFJ, its actions and its management.”

The AGJPB has given 6 months’ notice to the IFJ, in accordance with its statutes. His departure will therefore be effective at the end of March 2024.
