Agree mayors: One of the most important decisions for North Jutland for many years

This is a discussion post. The post is an expression of the writer’s own position.

See below which North Jutland mayors and others have signed this post.

When the Folketing on Tuesday 19 March first examines the Construction Act on the 3rd Limfjord connection, it will be one of the most important decisions for North Jutland in many years.

The decision is important because we are already tired of queues, congestion and delays, and there is an alarming prospect that the problems will grow on us if we do nothing. The decision is important because we want to build a bridge to the future – not disconnect Northern Jutland.

The decision is important because the connection is of decisive importance for North Jutland’s many companies and workplaces. And the decision is important because the connection is linked to our ability to attract labour, investment and new opportunities. That is why March 19 is a day of joy.

The decision is an example of how we ensure results and new investments when we stand together in North Jutland.

The new Limfjord connection will be an approx. 20 km long four-lane motorway with connection to E45 Nordjyske Motorvej in the south and E39 Hirtshals motorway in the north.

The motorway runs west of Aalborg and across the island of Egholm. The motorway is led under the southern course of the Limfjord in a submerged tunnel and over Nørredyb on a low bridge. In this way, both the current Limfjordstunnel and the Limfjordsbridge are relieved, just as the transverse traffic inside Aalborg is relieved. Transport time is reduced and people can get to and from work and other chores quickly.

In addition, North Jutland achieves greater security and is much better prepared when the accident occurs and there is a breakdown of the existing connections of one kind or another. Aalborg Airport gets an even more central location, and for our business ports it is absolutely crucial that the Limfjord crossing goes much more smoothly. With less traffic over the existing Limfjordsbro in Aalborg, there is a better opportunity to strengthen the collective with, for example, new plus buses that run in a north-south axis, for example from Vodskov to Svenstrup.

Few construction projects have been more thoroughly and minutely reviewed, investigated and discussed than the 3rd Limfjord connection. Badly, the Limfjord Tunnel was opened on 6 May 1969, before the discussion turned to where a new connection should go. As early as 1973, various solutions were investigated. A total of 9 different models have been proposed, and since 2011 the Egholm connection has been investigated three times (2011, 2021 and 2023).

Every single time a concern has been raised, it has been taken seriously and thoroughly investigated. This whether it has been a question of tufted geese, otters, noise, asbestos, habitat directives or natura 2000 areas. It is characteristic of Danish democracy and of Danish construction processes that we always take critics and objections very seriously and spend the time investigating things as well as possible.

When Denmark does infrastructure projects of this caliber, the result is often better biodiversity and the environment than before we started. We saw this, among other things, with the Great Belt connection. The new Limfjord connection is the best imaginable under the given conditions. Now we have been discussing and researching for 50 years. Now is the time to put the spade in the ground and get started, of course all the time with due respect for nature and wildlife.
