An agreement was reached this Saturday evening with Evgueni Prigojine, head of the Russian paramilitary company Wagner, to stop the “movements” of his troops in order to avoid a bloodbath in Russia, according to Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko .

“Yevgeny Prigozhin has accepted the proposal of the President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko to stop the movements of the armed men of the Wagner society and measures for a de-escalation of tensions”, reported the unofficial Telegram channel of the Presidency of Belarus.

This same source indicated that a mediation took place throughout the day with the Kremlin. “What is on the table now is perfectly […] acceptable way to resolve the situation, with security guarantees for Wagner’s fighters,” she said.

The information was confirmed shortly after by Evgueni Prigojine, on Telegram. In a voice recording, Wagner’s boss said his men, finding themselves about 200 kilometers from the Russian capital Moscow, decided to turn around and return to their camps to avoid a bloodbath.

As a reminder, tensions between the Russian Executive and the paramilitary group Wagner, led by Yevgeny Prigojine, have intensified in recent days after the latter accused Russian forces of attacking its fighters in Ukraine. On Friday evening, the Russian Ministry of Defense denied the assertions of the boss of Wagner.

This Saturday, the forces of the Russian paramilitary group crossed the border between Ukraine and Russia, taking control of strategic points, notably in the Russian city of Rostov-On-Don, and continuing their route towards Moscow .
